General Manager

Emerald City Theatre (located in Chicago) seeks a motivated individual to be responsible for the day to day operations including Financial Management, Human Resources, Information Technology, and Office Management.  The company operates out of multiple venues including Broadway Playhouse, Athenaeum Theatre, and Victory Gardens Theater.  The General Manager directly supervises the Business Manager and reports to the Executive Director.

Candidate Qualifications: 

  • Proven track record in Operations Management of a mid-size or larger organization.
  • Strong financial management skills and knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
  • Ability to establish and coordinate all aspects of the human resources function, including organizational development, training, compensation and benefits, safety, employee relations, payroll, HR policy design and administration, process improvement, employment, and labor laws, conflict management, team building, and compliance.
  • Strong interpersonal, written/verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to be self-directed and to handle multiple tasks and priorities.
  • Experience designing and building infrastructure and procedures to support a successful and growing organization.
  • Proficiency in QuickBooks, Microsoft Office and knowledge of fundraising database software (we use Salesforce/Patron Manager).
  • Sense of personal and professional accountability.
  • Demonstrated ability to think innovatively and strategically and to achieve results in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
  • Outstanding organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Schedule flexibility and ability to work occasional nights and weekends.
  • Proven high degree of integrity, ethical decision-making, and sound business judgment.

Schedule/Compensation/Environment: 

  • 40+hours/week with some evenings and weekends
  • Salary range of $45,000 – $55,000, commensurate with experience, generous time off package and benefits

Recently named Chicago’s Best Children’s Theater by Make it Better magazine, Emerald City Theatre (ECT) celebrates all of Chicago’s children through playful, professional, and culturally relevant artistic programs that motivate young people to creatively face the world. Audience Services Associates

Job Type: Part-Time
Job Department: Audience Services
Responsibilities: 
The Audience Services Associate acts as both a Front-of-House staff member, as well as the “face” of Emerald City Theatre at our respective performance venues. At Victory Gardens Theater, this position will be responsible for greeting patrons, facilitating the pre-show activity, handling all merchandise sales, and overseeing the post-show autograph session. The Audience Services Associate will also be responsible for performance report communications and inventory/sales reporting. 

Availability: 
Fantastic Mr. Fox – Victory Gardens Theater 

General performance schedule (schedule varies week-to-week): Wednesday-Saturday, 1:00 PM & 7:00 PM. Saturdays at 4:00 PM. Sundays at 2:30 PM & 5:00 PM. Additional student matinee performances on weekdays at 10:30 AM. Afternoon/evening availability on weekdays/weekends preferred. Preferably available the week of December 24 and 30 (no performances on Tuesday, December 25 and Tuesday, January 1). Runs December 9 – January 12. 

Qualifications and Skills: 
• Excellent face-to-face customer service skills 
• Enjoys interacting with children of all ages, including babies and toddlers 
• A general understanding of and passion for family theater 
• Works well in a fast-paced, crowded environment 
• Retail/ merchandise experience 
• Experience controlling crowds in an efficient and courteous manner
• Good teamwork and quick problem-solving skills 
• Ability to count and handle cash and make change 
• Experience with Patron Manager a plus 
• Familiarity with Square, Google Drive, and Excel spreadsheets and data entry, with high attention to detail 
• Ability to lift and carry up to 40 lbs. and climb stairs 
• Ability to stand for 3 to 4 hours 
• Willingness to perform light cleaning duties 

Compensation: $12/hr Begins late November/Early December.

Teaching Artists

Teaching Artists for Summer Camp 2018

Emerald City Theatre, Chicago’s most attended theatre for children ages 0 – 13, seeks lead and assistant teaching artists for Emerald City Summer Camps. Teaching artists report to the Associate Education Director. Their primary responsibility is to facilitate summer camps for ages 3.5-15. Summer Camp sessions are 1-2 weeks in length, between June 4 and August 17. Camps for ages 3.5-5 are half-day (9am-12pm/1pm-4pm), and camps for ages 5-15 are full day (9am-3pm). At this time, Emerald City Theatre is primarily looking for Assistant Teaching Artists, though we are also accepting resumes for Lead Teaching Artists

LEAD TEACHING ARTIST JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • Emerald City Teaching Artists are practicing theatre artists in the city of Chicago who are committed to building an appreciation of theatre in their students through education in theatre practices.
  • Lead Teaching Artists will remain with their students for the duration of the camp session. This includes following all drop-off and pick-up procedures.
  • Utilize curriculum guidelines to create theatre class content that is developmentally appropriate and supports the class theme.
  • Lead Teaching Artists are responsible for submitting lesson plans and being prepared for all class sessions.
  • During class, Lead Teaching Artists will lead students in activities which may include: acting exercises, teaching or accompanying songs, directing a scene, or creating choreography. Lead Teachers should contribute their own talents to the instruction of the students and provide opportunities for the Assistant T.A. to contribute to the class as well.
  • Lead Teaching Artist will provide appropriate feedback to Assistant Teaching Artist regarding teaching and classroom management techniques.
  • Lead Teaching Artist will ensure that all parents receive communications from the Emerald City Theatre Education Department.
  • Lead Teaching Artists are responsible for attending all faculty meetings and reporting any problems that arise with students and/or parents to the Education Department.
  • Lead Teaching Artists will act as creator and director for the class’s final presentation to be performed at the final class session.

Qualifications:

  • Currently working as a theatre artist OR have formal training theatre, music, or dance
  • Lead Teaching Artists should have 3-4 years of experience working with young people ages 13 or younger in arts education.
  • Excellent communication skills both written and oral.
  • Be physically able to teach, which may include standing for long periods of time, sitting on the floor, or walking up and down stairs
  • Upon hire, teachers will be subject to a criminal background check through the Illinois State Police and FBI and checked against the Illinois Sex Offender Registry and the Violent Offender Against Youth Database. Some placements require fingerprinting and additional Child Sexual Abuse training.

  • Assistant Teaching Artists will ensure that all parents receive communications from the Emerald City Theatre Education Department.
  • Assistant Teaching Artists will act as an assistant director for the class’s final presentation to be performed at the final class session.

Qualifications:

  • Currently working as a theatre artist OR have formal training theatre, music, or dance
