Development Assistant

Job Title: Development Assistant Job

Type of Employment: Part Time

Reports to: Development Manager

Time Commitment:
This is a part-time seasonal position from October 2017 – May 2018, requiring approx. 10 hours per week, with increased hours (up to 20/ week) in the two weeks preceding the Holiday and Spring Galas.

Primary Responsibilities:
Assist the Development Department with planning and implementation of the Holiday Gala and Spring Gala, as well as opening receptions, meetings, and other administrative tasks. These will include, but are not limited to:

  • Working the Holiday Gala on Nov 19, 2017, (approx. 8 am – 2pm)
  • Working the Spring Gala on April 26, 2018 (approx. 3pm – 10pm)
  • Helping to secure items for silent auction and raffle items
  • Maintaining database of silent and live auction items, and raffle items
  • Creating display materials for auction and raffle
  • Running the silent auction table at Gala, with other duties as assigned
  • Participate in Event clean-up and other Event wind-down activities
  • Delivery of silent and live auction items
  • Coordination of live auction delivery support
  • Assist the Development Manager with donor acknowledgment letters on a weekly basis
  • Research Gala guest and donor information, and with other research projects as needed
  • Admin duties including light filing, data entry

Qualifications:

  • 1-2 years experience working in an office environment, preferably non-profit
  • High attention to detail with ability to multi-task
  • Comfortable interacting with a wide range of people in a professional and friendly manner
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Discretion with sensitive patron information
  • Experience in office administration, including proficiency in Word and Excel
  • Experience with Patron Manager/ SalesForce a plus
  • Ability to read sales records and type/enter sales
  • Past Event coordination experience a plus
  • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends
  • Able to walk and stand for extended periods of time, climb stairs, and lift at least 40 pounds.
  • Valid Driver’s License a plus

Magic Tree House: Showtime with Shakespeare – Male Identifying Understudy

Emerald City Theatre is casting a male identifying understudy, covering an ensemble track, for MAGIC TREE HOUSE: SHOWTIME WITH SHAKESPEARE. We are especially looking for an actor of color. This new musical will perform at The Apollo Theater (2540 North Lincoln Avenue). The music for this production is hip-hop/rap and R&B based with rock and pop influences. Artistic Associate Jamal Howard is casting a strong musical theater actor who is comfortable performing rap.

About the play: The show must go on! That’s what Jack and Annie learn when the Magic Tree House whisks them back to Elizabethan England. The sibling duo meet William Shakespeare himself but Shakespeare is having a hard time with some of the actors in his latest show. Jack and Annie must rise to the occasion, perform, and help Shakespeare premiere his latest play, A Midsummer Night’s Dream for Queen Elizabeth. Jack gets stage fright and doesn’t want to perform but Shakespeare and his fellow actors and theater artists show Jack how to overcome his fears.

Mother Goose’s Garden – Male Understudy

Emerald City Theatre is casting an immediate replacement for the role of male understudy, covering the character of Jack for Mother Goose’s Garden (Theatre for the Very Young, Ages 0-5).

This world premiere is an immersive production located in our Baby Theatre facility at 2933 North Southport Avenue. This role requires basic singing and guitar playing skills. Artistic Director Jacqueline Stone is casting a strong performer with teaching artist experience. The audition will be part performance and part interview. Currently the show is in an open run, and predicted to run through early Spring 2018. There are some guaranteed performances for the understudy.

Material to Prepare:  Sing 60 seconds of any kid or standard song (ex. Row, row row your boat, itsy bitsy spider). Play a simple song on guitar (you can combine this with the 60 seconds of song). Sides will be emailed if you confirm an appointment. We will read some scenes from the script.

Specific dates will be discussed at interview. This production is primarily a daytime commitment, Wednesdays thru Sundays. Education experience is a plus, but not required.

Bilingual Teaching Artists

Emerald City Theatre, Chicago’s most attended theatre for children ages 0 – 15, seeks lead and assistant teaching artists who are fluent in both English and Spanish for Emerald City Theatre classes and residencies. Teaching artists report to the Associate Education Director. Their primary responsibility is to facilitate theatre education programming for ages 3.5-15 during once-a-week classes and in-school residencies. 

TEACHING ARTIST JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • Emerald City Teaching Artists are practicing theatre artists in the city of Chicago who are committed to building an appreciation of theatre in their students through education in theatre practices.
  • Teaching Artist will utilize curriculum guidelines to create theatre class content that is developmentally appropriate and supports the class theme.
  • During class, Teaching Artists will lead students in activities which may include: acting exercises, teaching or accompanying song, directing a scene, or creating choreography.
  • Teaching Artist will ensure that all parents receive communications from the Emerald City Education Department.
  • Teaching Artists are responsible for attending all faculty meetings and reporting any problems that arise with students and/or parents to the Education Department.
  • Teaching Artists will act as creator and director for the class’s final presentation to be performed at the final class session.

Qualifications:

  • Currently working as a theatre artist OR have formal training theatre, music, or dance
  • Lead Teaching Artists should have 3-4 years of experience working with young people ages 13 or younger in arts education.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish
  • Excellent communication skills both written and oral.
  • Be physically able to teach which may include standing for long periods of time, sitting on the floor, or walking up and down stairs
  • Upon hire, teachers will be subject to a criminal background check through the Illinois State Police and FBI and checked against the Illinois Sex Offender Registry and the Violent Offender Against Youth Database.
